Living with anxiety can be a daily struggle to keep your mind at ease, calm your body, and rest your soul. If anxiety is a part of your life, meet with others in a supportive, warm environment on Thursday evenings for anxiety reduction and stress relief through artistic exploration, creative expression, and fun with Summer Myers, Clinical Art Therapist and Registered MFT Intern. Use art materials and image-making as a way to combat anxiety and stress. Materials will vary from week to week. No previous art experience is required.
Art therapy is far more than adult coloring books. This unique form of therapy combines traditional talk psychotherapy with artmaking to soothe, communicate, heal, and stimulate personal insights on both a verbal and a nonverbal level. The National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) has a review of past studies on art therapy’s power to reduce tension and anxiety as well as produce other positive results. Artmaking can put us in a meditative state through visual cues, the kinesthetic motions of drawing and sculpting, and the tactile qualities of the art materials themselves according to Kapitan, 2012. Art therapy requires a therapeutic relationship, both with the therapist and with the art itself. According to the NCBI study, art therapy works to reduce anxiety in three ways: first, the creative process in general is relaxing and stimulating; second, communicating verbally and visually within the therapeutic relationship allows one to feel understood and listened to; and third, one forms a relationship to their own art that allows meaningful, symbolic expression and reflection. Come join us to try it out for yourself!
