Am I a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP)?
A Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) is someone with a heightened sensitivity to external stimuli, emotional experiences, and social environments. The term was popularized by psychologist Dr. Elaine Aron in the 1990s and is not a disorder but a personality trait known as Sensory Processing Sensitivity (SPS). HSPs make up roughly 15-20% of the population.

Key Characteristics of HSPs (Highly Sensitive Persons):
Deep Processing: HSPs tend to think deeply about experiences and information, often reflecting on emotions and events more thoroughly than others.
High Emotional Responsiveness: They may feel emotions—both their own and others'—more intensely and are highly empathetic.
Sensitivity to Subtle Stimuli: HSPs notice small details, subtle changes, and nuances in their environment that others might overlook.
Overstimulation: Due to their sensitivity, HSPs can become overwhelmed by bright lights, loud noises, strong smells, or crowded, chaotic environments.
Heightened Awareness of Others: They are often attuned to the feelings, needs, and nonverbal cues of those around them.
Common Experiences:
Feeling drained in busy or highly stimulating environments.
Needing time alone to recharge after social interactions or overwhelming situations.
Being deeply moved by art, music, or nature.
Struggling with criticism or harsh feedback.
HSPs (Highly Sensitive Persons) thrive in environments where they feel valued, supported, and able to recharge when needed. Recognizing and embracing their sensitivity can help HSPs use it as a strength rather than a challenge. Therapy can help HSPs with their reactions to sensitivities and develop a healthy coping strategies to better manage daily experiences.
